Working With Markers

Working With Markers

September 24, 2017

These fun backyard birds are done with Prismacolor Markers and a white gel pen. This is really my first time working with markers and being successful with it. Every medium takes a few tries to get the feel for how it works.

I've had these prismacolor markers for over 10 years and most of them still work! Pretty amazing really! I originally got them in my art kit back in college but we never really learned how to use them in class. So they sat basically untouched for many years.

Recently, (maybe a few months now) I started watching some artist vlogs on youtube and one artist is amazing with markers, her website is www.happyd-artist.com. They are beautiful pieces and I was so excited to go and dig my markers out, (well first find them) and give them a try myself. I found the markers, organized them to see which ones still worked and then sat and stared at them. I didn't have a clue as to where to start with markers!

I kept watching the videos for technique, how to get started and which ones would be best to start with. The videos really helped and soon I was brave enough to try on my own! The trick is to start out light and go darker. It's interesting that you can do layers with markers. I also use a white gel pen to make the highlights which works great! I'm going to keep experimenting with this medium and see where it goes.

Until next time, happy drawing everyone!
